The one healthy thing I MUST do on a daily basis

women's multi-vitamins vitamins vitamins

Today I’m sharing a look into one of my health related routines. Personally, I am always browsing blogs not just for fashion tips but health tips also. This habit is the one healthy thing I must do on a daily basis. I’ve been doing this for years and have rarely skipped a day. I almost regularly exercise and eat healthy but I always make sure I take vitamins and supplements. I started taking a women’s multi in high school and over the years have experimented with trying different types of vitamins for different reasons. If you’re currently researching vitamins and supplements, or have been taking them most of your life, I hope this post gives you some insight. I have to note, that I initiated taking these vitamins and supplements on my own through my own research. I felt these vitamins and supplements best suited my needs. This post is in no way giving medical advice and is just a journal post of my personal lifestyle. It’s always best to consult your doctor before taking any new vitamins and/or supplements. So, with that being said, below are the vitamins and supplements I take and my personal experience with them. If you have any advice please share! Also please ask any questions you may have and I’ll respond back. And if you’d like to see more health and fitness related posts on here, please let me know! I’d love to share more of my personal experiences in this area.

Magnesium:
When: PM right before bed
Daily: Yes
With Food?: about four hours after dinner
How long: 2 years
Dose: 400mg (1 pill daily)
Effects: I always took the pill form but recently discovered a powdered form that comes in Raspberry Lemonade. I exercise daily whether it’s strength training or walking. I noticed that while taking this, I feel like my body overall operates better. My muscles aren’t as sore or if at all. Apparently, this can also lower stress levels, though on some days, I’m not so sure! I do drink the Mellow Mag before bed and I do feel that it helps me relax and fall asleep better.

Dandelion Root:
When: PM right before bed
Daily: Yes
With Food?: about four hours after dinner
How long: 3 months
Dose: 525mg (3 pills daily)
Effects: recently I felt like my fingers and toes have been swollen (so bizarre right?!). But really, I noticed my rings were tighter, etc. I usually attribute this to allergies but then I read women can sometimes swell in general, whether it’s from too high of sodium intake or just water weight. I also read that Dandelion Root can help combat this. It does work. I noticed I’m not as swollen. Dandelion also has other major health benefits such as an aid in digestion and has been a widely used herb for centuries. Who would’ve thought those annoying little weeds had huge benefits?!

Cranberry with Vitamin C:
When: PM right before bed
Daily: Yes
With Food?: about four hours after dinner
How long: 2 years
Dose: 25K mg (2 pills daily)
Effects:I’ve been known to have bladder infections from the time I was younger. My mom is also very prone to these so maybe genetically we are just more susceptible. Plus, I’m not great at drinking water, which usually offsets them. As a preventive, I take cranberry daily. I like that this particular one also has Vitamin C which is great for the immune system. I haven’t had bladder issues in awhile and haven’t even had a cold this winter. I’m hoping it’s related to this vitamin.

Hair Growth Supplement:
When: PM right before bed
Daily: Yes
With Food?: about four hours after dinner
How long: 1 year (started with Hairfinity then switched to Ouai currently on 2nd month)
Dose: 1 pill (Hairfinity was 2 pills daily)
Effects: I bleach and put excessive heat on my hair. In the past few years it’s definitely thinned out and broken off on the ends. It hates me for what I do to it. Not only do I use protective products on the outside, it’s important to protect it from the inside as well. I noticed with Hairfinity that my hair grew thicker first and then in length. After taking them for a little less than a year, I felt my growth plateaued. How this is possible, not sure, unless I was imagining it. I did some research and came across Jen Atkin’s Ouai pills. They got good reviews so I’m currently on my second pack. I like how it’s only one pill a day instead of two. I really like them so far, I’ve noticed an increase in length and oiliness. I opted for the Dry Hair version of them since my the other two options did not fit my needs (oily and thinning).

Detox Tea:
When: AM right after breakfast or PM right before bed
Daily: Yes
With Food?: no
How long: 3 years off and on
Dose: 1 hefty tsp
Effects: I’m a HUGE tea drinker, I have it in the morning when I’m getting ready for work and often times before bed. I always liked the idea of detox teas because of the blend of herbs that are in them have amazing health benefits. I’ve tried a few different brands. I think all taste good and they do take away cravings as well. I do these teatox’s off and on, when I feel like my GI tract needs some repair.

Collagen:
When: AM for breakfast (mixed into almond milk or baked into a one serving breakfast cake, recipe here)
Daily: Yes
With Food?: no
How long: 2 months
Dose: 1 hefty scoop
Effects: I’m not a huge breakfast person. I prefer something liquid and light and then a small snack a few hours later. Sometimes when I wake up I’m not even hungry before I leave for work in the morning. In Feb I started experimenting with different protein shakes for the first time. I did some research on collagen protein which lead me to this brand. I tried the vanilla and did not like it at all, but the chocolate is so so good! If I mix it in almond milk, it tastes like chocolate milk. I also bake it into a small cake when I’m craving something sweet. See this recipe here (I just substitute the coca powder for the protein powder). This powder is different because it’s collagen protein, which has health benefits that include nail and hair growth. In the past I’ve also tried the ThinkThin protein. This is very good as well and a lower price point. It’s not grass-fed nor collagen but it’s still beneficial for your body. Make sure to get the Madagascar Vanilla Bean French- so good!
